Chapter Thirteen

THE NEXT FIFTEEN MINUTES WHILE they waited for Detective McCann were, well, awkward. Addie was just glad Georgia didn’t try to leave because what would they do if she did? It wasn’t like Addie and Bennett had the right to physically stop her. But Georgia just sat in the chair, dejected.

Addie tried a few times to ask what Georgia had been doing when she left the brewery Thursday night, but she continued to refuse to answer.

“I know you’re afraid,” Addie said quietly. “But you’re not going to get out of this. You’re going to have to confess. I’d really like to know what happened to my aunt. And frankly, the police can deal with the attack and robbery. I just want to know where she is now.”

Georgia shook her head. “I don’t have any idea where she is. And I’m not the one who hurt her, so there’s nothing to confess.”

When Detective McCann finally arrived, she was accompanied by Officer Davis.

“You,” the detective said to Bennett. “You’re mixed up in this? I should have known.”

Bennett, to his credit, held his tongue. He gave Addie a slight roll of his eyes when Detective McCann wasn’t looking.

Officer Davis had given Addie a nod when he came in and then took up a post at the door, presumably to stop Georgia from bolting.

“Okay,” Detective McCann said with a sigh. “What’s going on here?”

Addie let Bennett explain what he’d discovered. Then she recounted how threatening Georgia had acted the previous night at Wild Rose but left out the part about Georgia wanting to end her pregnancy. And, of course, McCann picked up on the omission.

“What did Georgia need a remedy for?” the detective asked.

“You’ll have to ask her,” Addie said.

McCann faced Georgia. “Well?”

Georgia miserably stared at the floor. “I don’t want to say.”

“Fine. We’ll skip that for the moment. But we need to know where you were the night Kate James was attacked.”

“I didn’t hurt her,” Georgia said. “I can prove it.”

“How?” Addie asked, and was rewarded with a sharp, irritated look from the detective.

“I’ll ask the questions,” McCann said and then turned back to Georgia. “Can someone corroborate your claim?”

Georgia nodded. “His name is Woodrow Chatterton.”

Addie’s brow furrowed. “Chatterton, like the name on the law office sign behind Hair Affair?”

“Woodrow is one of the lawyers in that firm,” Bennett confirmed quietly when McCann ignored Addie’s question.

“And what were you doing with Mr. Chatterton?” McCann asked.

“Talking to him.” Georgia’s cheeks reddened.

“Why?”

“I . . . Oh, hell,” Georgia muttered. She straightened and cleared her throat. “I’ve been involved with Woodrow. Yes, that kind of involved. I’m pregnant with his child.”

Addie’s eyes popped wide.

“You were with him the entire time you were absent from Grinning Catfish?” McCann asked.

“Yes,” Georgia said.

“That’s a lie!” Addie jumped in. “Renaldo saw her look in the window of Wild Rose.”

Georgia grasped her forehead. “Sorry, yes, I did do that. Right before I went to Woodrow’s office. But that’s all I did, just look in the window.”

McCann heaved an exasperated sigh. “Okay.
